How to listen to internet radio on your iPhone

5 min read

Your iPhone is a superb radio — thousands of stations, great sound, and it fits in your pocket. Here's how to get a genuinely good listening experience, and the features worth caring about.

What to look for in a radio app

Any app can play a stream. A good one gets the details right:

Watch your mobile data

Streaming audio uses data. As a rough guide, a 128 kbps music stream uses somewhere around 55–60 MB per hour; a 320 kbps stream, closer to 140 MB. If you listen for hours on a limited plan, favour lower-bitrate streams on cellular and save the high-quality ones for Wi-Fi. Talk and news stations use far less, so they're easy on your allowance.

Use a sleep timer at night

If you like drifting off to the radio, a sleep timer is your friend — set it for, say, 30 minutes and the app fades out and stops on its own, so your station isn't playing (and using data) until morning.

Turn your phone into a bedside radio

Pair a wake-up alarm with a favourite station and you can start the day with music or news instead of a jarring beep. Combined with AirPlay to a bedroom speaker, your iPhone quietly becomes the clock radio you always wanted.

RadioRipple was built around exactly these details — background play, Lock Screen controls, AirPlay, synced favourites, a worldwide directory, a sleep timer and a wake-up alarm. It's coming soon to the App Store.

A few habits of happy listeners

Keep a small set of favourites for the stations you return to, but leave room to wander — the joy of internet radio is the accidental discovery. Try a station from a country you've never visited. Follow a mood rather than a name. And when you find something wonderful, save it, because live radio is fleeting by design.
